Popworking x Sutton House
‘Popworking’ is a platform connecting local people and places post-pandemic by reimagining how we work together. Think of an Airbnb for remote work, powered by a supper club spirit.

It kickstarted with a coworking pop-up in one of the last remaining Tudor mansions in London, Sutton House in Hackney, for a neighbouring audience of creative and tech industry workers. Here, 'popworkers' were transported back to Tudor times to work from Sir Ralph Sadler's home for a day.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<img width="864" height="948" width_o="864" height_o="948" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f77193897be3f359e88064a8e3226067da9893c77c4a07666e5727c6044d6324/Group-166-1-1.png" data-mid="149010420" border="0" data-scale="45" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/864/i/f77193897be3f359e88064a8e3226067da9893c77c4a07666e5727c6044d6324/Group-166-1-1.png" />The mobile app design concept – Popworking (Margo Lazarenkova)

The project brief was to create a narrative environment as a product: a scalable, physical+digital experience, telling a story and addressing the real problem of real people. Grounding on the UX-research methods, the project focuses on people who work from home and explores our working routine: how different environments influence the way we work, what are the consequences of the global work-from-home experiment for our mental health and well-being and, finally, what are the new hybrid work scenarios imaginable?&nbsp;

<img width="1911" height="764" width_o="1911" height_o="764" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a174f08d6a07765dc6af7381f82513f6c661a7308786197413bc57404015215a/Frame-3-1.png" data-mid="149007437" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a174f08d6a07765dc6af7381f82513f6c661a7308786197413bc57404015215a/Frame-3-1.png" />
Emotional map, spatial experience design – Popworking x Sutton House (Margo Lazarenkova)

‘Popworking’ deconstructs existing spatial scenarios by inviting popworkers to engage with the story of the place and become characters of this story themselves. Sets of different touchpoints, such as Tudor-times inspired ‘coffee’ breaks with weak ale and rose-scented hand sanitiser create the sense of narrative temporality, immersing popworkers in the Tudor world.

<img width="3840" height="1654" width_o="3840" height_o="1654" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a78864ab1c37fdcf2dd882484a04d40b3b6910e0df2c86594c43d22fadb7668c/Frame-30-2.jpg" data-mid="149012696" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a78864ab1c37fdcf2dd882484a04d40b3b6910e0df2c86594c43d22fadb7668c/Frame-30-2.jpg" />21 Mar, 2022 – Popworking x Sutton House (Coworking pop-up, showcase experience).
Work story transports not only in time but also to a human character-focused narrative environment: graphic posters with motivational quotes are based on the life and career stories of the original owner of Sutton House, who managed to outlive four Tudor monarchs. Popworkers can try on an AR-filter with Sir Ralph's outfit for even greater immersion, and use it on a video call surprising their colleagues.

Background
The idea of the project is deeply rooted in the ‘third places’ concept. According to this, ‘third places’ are different from the two usual social environments of home ("first place") and the workplace ("second place") – places such as public libraries, bookstores, museum open spaces, and cafes. The project explores how this concept is evolving due to the recently shifted and mixed ‘sense of place’ between ‘work’ and ‘home’.

BRUTALLY HONESTA student-led radio broadcast exploring misinformation in relation to Putin’s war on Ukraine streamed from the Barbican and CSM

MA Narrative Environments radio broadcast in solidarity with Ukraine featuring conversation, music and sounds from Eastern Europe and its diaspora.

The broadcast streamed live 28 February 2022 as an emergent response to war actions that started in Ukraine and in solidarity with Ukrainian people. Set in motion by CSM MANE students Margo Lazarenkova (Minsk-born) and Edit Kruk (Moscow-born), BRUTALLY HONEST connects the voices of the Ukrainian, Belarusian and Russian diasporas in Europe with the global creative community. The show takes a critical perspective on mainstream narratives in relation to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and is punctuated with interviews conducted online, live at CSM and on-site at London’s brutalist Barbican Estate.

EMERGE 2022
Since 2018,&nbsp; EMERGE has become the leading startup conference in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. After 2 years online, we came back as a hybrid event – bringing together nearly 3,000 founders, investors and tech makers in Yerevan, Armenia, and online in our audio series stream. The broad discussion on metaverse, Web3.0 and debates on how the next heir of the world wide web should and could look like inspired us to think in three dimensions. The visual identity and experience design for the festival was rooted in the embodied perception of space and spatial movement.

Unmute yourself – Unit9&nbsp;
The research project was completed during Margo’s internship at the innovation department at Unit9 during her study at MA Narrative Environments course. It was dedicated to exploring potential product design narratives on how immersive technologies can fix the video call fatigue and improve the virtual events experience.
During the pandemic, people who worked from home began to suffer from a new phenomenon called video call fatigue. The project explored whether we can use the Unit9‘s haptic technology aligning physical and virtual worlds to solve this problem. Leveraging Margo’s previous events experience, the use case focus was made on virtual events. As a result, three product design narratives were developed (personas, user journeys and sketching), followed by an article summing up the research exploration.

From the article:

The way we communicate has changed. Moreover, the environment for communication has evolved:

● Physical spaces are becoming more and more occupied by digital devices

● The digital world becomes more realistic, using 3D graphics, 3D sound, and
other immersive technologies

● Digital and physical layers merge together creating a novel type of
experience for human communication

This new type of experience influences our behaviour patterns, sometimes affecting
our well-being (such as in the case of Zoom fatigue).
People still have a way to go to learn how to navigate these hybrid spaces and use
them for effective communication and collaboration. We might view immersive
technologies as a tool that is absorbing us into the unreal world. However, it could
also serve as an instrument helping us to restore the connection to each other and
to our inner selves, or to bring back the joy of being present and focused. The
choice is on us.

Jun 2021 – Oct 2021Public_installation

A ‘Portal’ pavilion – British Library
MA Narrative Environments students proposed a project to design a novel installation for the piazza of the British Library which normally functions as a thoroughfare, a place to congregate for users, staff and passers-by.

The multi-disciplinary student team worked closely with the BAME Staff Network at the Library, and gathered the views of a range of staff members via interviews and a questionnaire, to create an installation that would provoke thought and facilitate discussions&nbsp;around what it could mean to decolonise and diversify the Library’s collections.

<img width="1921" height="1082" width_o="1921" height_o="1082" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/400baf776c3301f1f50c6513d2696cf550feaed30933c4d3c172cf2f1c486ea4/British_Library_Structure_Interior.jpeg" data-mid="149533198" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/400baf776c3301f1f50c6513d2696cf550feaed30933c4d3c172cf2f1c486ea4/British_Library_Structure_Interior.jpeg" />Image showing the interior of the British Library – design proposal.

The vast collections span millennia and many different parts of the world, and inevitably parts of the collection can be associated with British imperial expansion. That history has rarely featured in the Library’s interpretation, its displays and artwork, its webpages and projects.

The students designed a pavilion that would enable those who enter to unearth diverse and conflicting stories held within the Library. The student team proposed that the pavilion, being positioned directly over the four floors of basement stores, would function as an unexpected ‘portal’ with a digital interface that pictured the world of the Library below ground. An app would enable visitors to use their mobile phones to draw up content from the collection. Voice recordings, text, images and digital representations of objects would be visualised floating up to the surface and hovering at eye level.

Image showing the British Library from above – design proposal.

The students envisaged that the portal/pavilion would&nbsp;act as a new gateway into the Library, a moment of spectacle, surprise, discovery, the start of a new journey into the Library’s world. It would&nbsp;become a magnet, attracting attention, inviting exploration, building connectivity and introducing opportunities for sharing content and prompting new forms of co-curation.

The use of a digital platform has the potential to enable the content to be shared in multiple ways among users, and could be curated by staff, co-curated by staff and users, or co-curated by groups of users.

EMERGE 2021
During our second fully virtual conference in pandemic times we experiment with participatory formats to deliver more than people expect from the online event, while focusing on the EMERGE original purpose – connecting great people in tech. We broke last year’s record and gathered together 6,522 participants from 102 countries: startups, tech talent, investors, media, and corporates.EMERGE 2021 stated its mission to explore the new ways to connect with each other, with yourself and our home planet.
It became a shared online experience and a place where everyone was a contributor rather than a listener: 2 virtual stages with live interviews and talks about the future, technologies and wellbeing delivered by 61 speakers from all over the world, themed audio clubtables, 8 workshops, alongside 852 mentorship sessions and 1-on-1 consultations, networking and more than 80 startup pitches. All followed by 5 offline micro-afterparties held locally by the EMERGE community in different cities.

EMERGE 2021 photoreport by Tania Kapitonova. With an aim to create a sense of togetherness and connectivity for our attendees, we expanded the virtual EMERGE experience with a nice offline touch: we collaborated with Bremen-based artist and illustrator Daria Sazanovich, to design special merch. We then delivered it to different parts of the world to the longest and dearest members of our EMERGE community, just before the event. This meant that they could participate in the event in style and also have a memorable keepsake of the rarest thing in the pandemic times - a printed and signed conference badge!

EMERGE 2020
In 2020, the EMERGE conference has gone fully virtual, with only two months left till the event start.&nbsp; We reconfigured the programme structure, designed a device-agnostic experience and gathered together 4,308 great people in tech from more than 100 countries: startups, tech talent, investors, media and corporates.Across 5 stages, more than 100 speakers from 7 time zones (from Australia to California) were sharing their experience and ideas on how technologies will shape our future and how to build and scale tech products in a global market.

EMERGE is a conference with a festival vibe, which is why the online format put a question to us: can we still make friends at EMERGE online? That is why we treated the online afterparty seriously: we orgnised a spatial sound and networking experience with a livestream DJ-set, karaoke and informal talks using the virtual platfrom Spatial.Chat.

EMERGE 2019
The second EMERGE conference perfomed a graceful transformation from a factory-held medium-scale festival, to a professional global tech event in the black box arena, all while staying true to its indie values and vibes. The event gathered 2,100 attendees from more than 43 countries and became a meeting point and place-to-be for the whole startup and tech community in the New East.
The main agenda was dedicated to building and growing global product and emereging technologies shaping the way we live, eat, work and even die. It was designed around 3 themed stages: FUTURE, BUILD and GROWTH, followed by&nbsp;10 networking side events in different parts of the city.

EMERGE 2019 photoreport: Tanya Kapitonova, Kasia Syramolot

The EMERGE 2019 visitor experience was hybrid: using the PINE platform we designed a conference app for our attendees to navigate the venue, network, send requests for meetings at the Matchmaking area, view the conference schedule and create their own agenda from their top picks.

May 2018Startup_festival, IRL_event

EMERGE 2018The very first EMERGE conference transformed an old factory building on one of the most hip streets in Minsk into a global Silicon Valley spirit tech hub for 2 days. The launch event gathered more than 1,600 makers and doers in tech, becoming the startup festival of the whole New East region.
EMERGE festival is an indie-conference, co-founded by Alina Nilsson and Margo Lazarenkova. It is the international tech event designed to unite the startup scene of Eastern Europe and Central Asia (region also known as the New East) and to prove it to be more than just an outsource-hub for major tech companies.

EMERGE is a true meeting point for East and West. For startups, it is an opportunity to present their ideas to accelerators, investors and VCs that are willing to invest directly into early-stage startups from the New East. And for investors and media EMERGE is a chance to be the first to tap into this region and to learn about its emerging companies and ideas, – Margo Lazarenkova, organiser of EMERGE, Founder of Create IT! community (Minsk).
