CREATIVE CITY SVETLOGORSK
The report on the creative potential of a local town in Belarus was produced as part of the EU Culture and Creativity program. It includes urban research, cultural places mapping and a series of interviews that resulted in the creation of Svetlogorsk’s Urban Culture DNA and action plan for further development of its creative potential.
In Belarus, Svetlogorsk was chosen as a pilot city for the Creative Towns and Regions Initiative. Comparing to other pilots from the Eastern Partnership region, Svetlogorsk seems to be a rather controversial choice at first sight. This middle-sized town in the south-east of Belarus, with a population around 69,000 people, has neither rich cultural heritage, like in Kosiv (Ukraine), nor unique nature landscape, as for example in Sisian (Armenia). Nevertheless, this is just a superficial conclusion. When you get closer to the city, you can find many of its hidden cultural and creative treasures.
